Dog Behaviour Consultation
Why does your dog bark at other dogs? Why are they fearful of loud noises? How can you stop them from chewing the furniture?
Understanding your dog’s behaviour and emotional responses is key to addressing and resolving these common issues.
Personalised service
I take a holistic approach to understanding dog behaviour, considering not only the dog’s natural instincts and past experiences but also the environmental factors that may be influencing their actions. This allows me to develop a personalised behaviour modification plan that’s tailored to meet the unique needs of each dog.

Separation anxiety in dogs can lead to a range of challenging behaviours when they’re left alone, including barking, whining, destructive chewing, pacing, indoor accidents, and even obsessive licking.
For owners, a dog with separation anxiety can create significant limitations. It can disrupt everyday activities, turning simple outings—like an evening with friends or even a trip to the office—into stressful events.
Separation anxiety doesn’t resolve on its own, and it’s important to seek the support of a Clinical Animal Behaviourist to ensure the issue is addressed in a thoughtful and effective way. A tailored, step-by-step approach is key to helping your dog overcome these challenges.
-
Does your dog bark at every sound they hear in the house? Do they bark at passersby through the window, or at visitors—especially the postman? Maybe they bark when you leave for a quick errand, and again when you return?
There are many reasons why a dog may bark excessively. They could be bored and frustrated, reacting to environmental triggers, or they may simply belong to a breed that’s more vocal by nature.
My role is to identify the underlying cause of the barking and develop tailored strategies to help manage and reduce this behaviour effectively.
-
Resource guarding occurs when a dog becomes protective of something they value, whether it’s a favorite toy, their food, or even something unexpected, like a sock. Signs of resource guarding can include growling, lunging, lip curling, hard stares, or even attempts to bite if someone tries to take the item away.
If not addressed, resource guarding can escalate quickly, so it’s important to manage the behavior carefully to ensure the safety of everyone in the household.
I am able to lead you through a behaviour modification programme that is specific to your dog and, most importantly, work at a pace that is appropriate for your dog.
-
Does your dog become overly excited or reactive at the sight of another dog? Do they bark and lunge, leaving you constantly trying to avoid confrontations during walks?
Reactive behaviour can also extend to people. Does your dog bark at the doorbell or when visitors arrive? Are they unable to settle, making it difficult to have friends and family over because your dog’s behaviour feels unmanageable?
Reactivity is surprisingly common, and understanding the underlying cause is key to creating an effective behaviour modification plan. I can help you identify what’s motivating your dog’s reactions and guide you through a customised, step-by-step process to address and reduce their reactivity.

Fearful behaviours in dogs can take many forms—whether it's a fear of fireworks, car journeys, thunderstorms, lorries, strangers, or even busy town centers. Dogs can develop phobias around a wide range of situations and stimuli.
The first step in helping a dog with a fear or phobia is to recognise the signs that they’re feeling anxious. A stressed dog will often show clear body language and facial expressions that signal their discomfort.
I can help you identify your dog’s early warning signs of anxiety and work with you to implement a behaviour modification strategy. Through a gradual desensitisation process, we can help your dog feel more comfortable and confident in situations that currently cause fear.

Steps to a behaviour consultation
-
The first step is to contact me using the contacts form, outlining what it is you need help with. We can then discuss the best package for you going forward and book in a time for the consultation.
-
I only take on Behaviour Consultations on veterinary referral. This is to rule out any medical reasons, such as pain and disease, for the behaviour problems. Ask your vet for a referral to Sarah Heyes Dog Behaviour and ask them to complete the form on my vet’s page.
-
I will send you a link to an online questionnaire so that I can find out as much about you and your dog as possible, enabling me to prepare for the consultation.
-
Behaviour consultations typically last 60-90 minutes and allow me to determine the cause of the problematic behaviour and to discuss with you behaviour modification strategies. Assessments are usually carried out in your home. In some circumstances it may be more appropriate for the assessment to take place online, for example if your dog is anxious around visitors.
-
I will prepare a personalised Behaviour Management Plan for you, summarising all that we discussed in the assessment and outlining the steps to achieve your behaviour goals. I will also send a concise version of the report to your vet.
-
To ensure you reach your behaviour goals, I include two 20 minute follow-up sessions, either through Zoom or phone call in the full package. This allow us to review progress and adjust the exercises to keep you and your dog on track for success. Extra sessions can be added on as necessary for an additional cost.
I also offer unlimited contact via WhatsApp for 12 weeks after the assessment, so I can answer any questions and give you that extra level of support whenever you need it.
A Dog Behaviour Consultation is perfect for:
Dog owners that are unable to leave their dog without human company without their dog barking, toileting or being destructive..
Dog owners that avoid walking in areas with other dogs because they are afraid their dog will react.
Dog owners that are unable to have friends around to their house because their dog barks at all visitors.
Dog owners that cannot go near their dog when the dog is eating because the dog will lunge at them.
Dog owners whose dogs are afraid of loud noises or going on car journeys.

Investing in your dog’s future
While it might seem like there are quick fixes on TV, the reality is that addressing dog behaviour issues takes time, dedication, and patience. A successful behaviour modification plan requires consistent effort, and the changes you’ll see will be gradual.
I’ll be here to guide you through the process and help you stay on track. But it’s important to be ready for the hard work that will be required along the way.
That said, your dog is a beloved and valued member of your family, and the time and energy you invest now will pay off in the long run, creating a happier, more balanced relationship with your dog.
If you are committed to your dog’s welfare and want the best for them, then drop me a message using the contacts form today.
